Defeat you can accept, although sometimes the manor of this is unacceptable and this was probably the case with Sheffield United’s 3-0 win over Colchester.

John Ward, as he told BBC Essex, expects better than he got from his U’s side at Bramall Lane: ‘they know that we’ve probably been a little bit easy to beat, and that’s the disappointment we go home with.

‘We’ve got to do better than that, even against the good teams.’

He knows that teams ‘like Sheffield United’ will be hard to compete with over the course of a season but over the course of a game, at least a half, this should be different: ‘we’ll find it really hard over 46 games to finish above people like Sheffield United, but over 45 minutes we can give them a better game than we’ve managed to do.’
