John Ward, as he told BBC Essex, was more than happy with Colchester’s league one opening day win at Preston.

A 4-2 win at Deepdale, against a side relegated from the championship, is a feat that Ward expects few others to achieve: ‘We’ve beaten a very good team. I don’t think very many will score four or win here.’

Scoring goals was The U’s main problem last season away from home, the ‘very hard’ work put in has paid off though: ‘a major problem last year was scoring goals away from home.

‘The finishing was a lot better, we’ve worked very hard at it.’
