Having already spoken about his ‘delight’ at extending Michail Antonio’s loan John Ward, as he told the official website, has also highlighted the benefits of this.

The Colchester manager knows that The U’s, unlike his parent club Reading, can offer him regular 1st team football that will further enhance his progression: ‘we were able to offer Michail regular games, something Reading couldn’t at the time and it has worked out well for everyone.

‘Reading have kept tabs on his progress and his good form has helped us in the short term and will help Reading in the long term. Playing well for us will mean he should be able to stake a claim for a place in their Championship side in the future.’

If Antonio continues to do the business for The U’s then his chance at Reading might come sooner rather than later?
