New Colchester United manager John Ward has welcomed Dagenham and Redbridge`s unlikely play-off and promotion from League Two for the 2010/11 season as a triumph over Rotherham as a boost for Colchester United.
The replacement for Aidy Boothroyd, now with Coventry, also said their remarkable assent under John Still reminded him of his former days as a boss at Cheltenham Town.
Ward said: “Fantastic effort from them. What a wonderful story for John Still and the Dagenham boys. I`d liken it a little bit to Cheltenham. I had four or five years at Cheltenham Town and they came through, rose, go into League One and had a couple of seasons. They beat Leeds twice. “
On the challenge of a new derby day opponent, trading places with relegated arch-rivals Souhend United, Ward added: “For us to have a local derby twice, think that`s really good and I think it`ll be really good for them as well as ourselves.”
