If there was any doubt, which the would not have been, that Colchester were the happier of the sides after a 0-0 draw at Tranmere then John Ward has confirmed things.

Ward was ‘very happy with the result’ in a game that he feels The U’s more than matched Tranmere in: ‘we played a good team and I am very happy with the result.

‘Les has got Tranmere working very hard and we matched them. They are very positive and I would like to think we are heading in the same direction.

It took some good saves to keep the scores level, although Colchester also had some decent chances: ‘it was fantastic to keep a clean sheet. Our keeper made some important saves. But we did get a little break in the first half when they missed an easy goal chance.

‘We had a couple of good chances ourselves but did not put them away. We had to stay strong and did so. If we had wilted at all we would have been beaten.’

The U’s manager conceded that the hosts ‘probably’ shaded the game but takes the morale booster ahead of the FA cup next weekend: ‘Tranmere probably had the better of the game so it is a good draw for us. I think it is a deserved point and it boosts our confidence ahead of an FA Cup tie next Saturday.’
