A Colchester United forward line bereft of Clive Platt (Coventry) and Kevin Lisbie (Ipswich) has given John Ward some selection headaches ahead of the new season.

Of the three remaining strikers – Steven Gillespie, Joel Thomas and Kayode Odejayi -Thomas is still seemingly frozen out of the first-team picture, as he has so often been since arriving last year with a dubious goal-record from Scottish side Hamilton.

On the Platt situation, boss Ward told the EADT: “I don`t think we need to rush into finding a replacement – it needs to be given some thought. I`m scouring the papers and talking to my scouts and, although nothing is imminent, we are on top of the situation.”

The manager said he is monitoring the possibility of signing some top-flight class players following new rulings over squad sizes in the Primer League.
