Colchester United`s midfield stalwart Kevin Watson has promised this week that the long-standing Achilles problem which has kept him out of first-team action since the start of the season will not force him out of the game for good.

Although Watson, 33, had admitted the problem to be the first major injury of his lengthy career, the lynchpin told the town`s Evening Gazette that, after completing an hour of play for the reserve XI against Norwich, he was confident of pulling on the jersey once more.

He said: “I have a bit of a mini pre-season coming up over the next couple of weeks which no-one likes but it’s got to be done.”

Watson reiterated that he now needs to spend time re-building his fitness but sighted the side`s next game at West Bromwich Albion as being too soon for him to return to the fold.

His comments suggested that a full recovery will not be made, although he insisted he intends to continue playing. “I’ve got to the point with my Achilles where I’m going to be in a little bit of discomfort,’ he said.

“It’s something that’s not going to stop me from playing.”
