Aidy Boothroyd maintains he thoroughly enjoyed returning to management at the weekend. Who says being crazy isn`t essential in football`s madhouse?
After almost a year away following his Watford dismissal, Boothroyd`s baptism of fire involved cruel fate depriving him of two senior members of the U`s side facing Southampton.
Reflecting yesterday on BBC Radio Five Live, during the Football League bulletin show, Boothroyd resumes the narrative.
“I enjoyed it; it was brilliant. Great to be back.
“Kemal got sent-off after 36 minutes and then Pat Baldwin, the captain, was stretchered off after 42 minutes.”
Taken in isolation, there appears nothing overly fantastic about those events. Still, Aidy was delighted in context of Colchester`s response to what occurred, more than what happened.
“John Ward [assistant manager] tapped me on the shoulder and said: ‘Welcome back, Aidy.`” That`s how it is – you spend a few months out and then all the trials and tribulations start.”
“I thought the team played absolutely superbly. We were resilient, with ten men for two-thirds of the game.”
The U`s ended all square on zero-zero, but their opposition had a far superior possession count and far more shots.
“It`s been a big challenge,” added Boothroyd, speaking of the first few days since he took up the management cudgels once more.
