After the speculation surrounding Colchester United striker Chris Iwelumo reached fever pitch in recent weeks, manager Geraint Williams finally spoke out on BBC Road Essex, although his words did little to cool the situation.

Scorer of 18 goals this season, Iwelumo, 28 has been linked with a host of sides because his current contract expires in the summer. These reportedly include old team Stoke City and Scottish team Hearts.

Williams has said: “Chris is in negotiations with us. But he’s well within his rights to see what he can get and do the best for his family.”

“He’s had a fantastic season – we understand his situation.”

Williams added: “We want to do what’s best for him and the club as well.”

Many fans are now resigned to losing the talismanic front man, scorer of 37 goals since a move to Essex two seasons ago.

Reports of a pre-contract with another team do now though seem unfounded.

Iwelumo has been in great form with fellow partner Jamie Cureton in the Championship this season – with a game remaining, the pair have more that 40 goals.
