Colchester United manager Geraint Williams has admitted he has felt sorry for U’s ‘keeper Dean Gerken all year.

The U’s have the worst defensive record in the whole of England, conceding a massive 83 goals in 45 games. Despite Gerken only having one clean sheet to his name this season, he was named the U’s Young Player Of The Season for the second year running. Premier League outfit West Ham are reportedly tracking the 22-year-old shot-stopper.

Speaking to BBC Essex, Williams said: ‘He’s won so many awards, and rightly so, and still we’ve conceded so many goals.

‘I’ve felt sorry for Dean all year and we’ve got to make sure we give him more protection next season.’

Since making his U’s bow in 2004, against Brentford, he has made a real impression amongst U’s fans. England goalkeeping legend and coach Ray Clemence is known as to be one of Gerken’s admirers.
