Williams In The Market For A Front-Man

Colchester United manager Geraint Williams has confirmed he is on the lookout for a new striker following Kevin Lisbie’s departure.

Lisbie, who scored 17 goals last season, left the U’s to join neighbours Ipswich Town on Friday, for an undisclosed fee.

The U’s currently have three strikers on their books – Clive Platt, Scott Vernon and recent signing Steven Gillespie, but Williams believes four are needed.

He told the EADT: ‘I reckon you need at least four senior strikers at this level these days.

‘Fabian (Quintyn) was very lively again. Ideally, you would want four experienced strikers and a young guy like Fabian in your squad.

‘We have our lists of players, and now that Kevin (Lisbie) has gone, we will be looking to identify these players for the chairman (Robbie Cowling).

‘Of course we all wish Kevin well on his move to Ipswich. He has been great for the club, and we were good for him. He has been the model professional throughout,’ Williams added.

‘When the approach was made by Ipswich, he came back to talk with us. In the end, the lure of playing in front of 25,000 crowds most weeks in the Championship swung it for him.

‘The chairman feels that it was the right deal for the club, and he’s always backed me as well. You know he’ll always do his best.’

Le Fondre The first Linked

Meanwhile, the U’s are reportedly keeping tabs on Rochdale striker Adam Le Fondre, according to The People.co.uk.

The 21-year-old, who is also attracting the attentions of the U’s League One rivals Leicester City and MK Dons, scored 17 goals last season as The Dale missed out on promotion.
