Colchester United manager Geraint Williams has insisted he will wield the selection axe on some of his side`s under-achieving players if their form fails to improve.

The U`s manager is concerned about the indiscipline in respect of gaols conceded.

Despite Williams having a huge squad to choose from, the team have fallen foul of the oft-mentioned Second Season Syndrome in the Championship and do not currently look capable of emulating last season`s highest-ever finish, achieved during their debut season at this level in 2006-7.

Yesterday, Williams explained his desire to increase competition for places still further – if need be.

“We already have a lot of players who are waiting for their chance,” he told the Gazette.

“It’s up to those players who are pushing for a place to take their chance.

“If there’s someone who can come in straight away and enhance the side, then we’re interested.’

The boss added: “The lads have done very well as an attacking force but we need to tighten up at the back.

“We’re scoring goals but like I’ve said before, we need to start eking out some 1-0 wins.”
