After a dramatic final day in the npower Championship this afternoon, the U’s are to enjoy games against both Wolverhampton Wanderers and Peterborough United next season.

Although Dean Saunders’ Wolves looked all-but-down after last week’s home defeat, a 2-0 defeat away to Brighton sealed their fate and the Midlands club suffer back-to-back relegations, becoming the first club since Swindon to do so from the Premier League.

Meanwhile, the days’ twists and turns at the bottom finished with Peterborough dropping into the final relegation spot at the death, as Mile Jedinak netted a last minute winner for Crystal Palace to relegate the Posh, with Barnsley having occupied the space until then.

U’s fans won’t complain at the significantly shorter trip to London Road than Yorkshire-based Barnsley, and both games against Wolves and Peterborough should see decent away days and home attendances.

The duo join already-relegated Bristol City who return to League One for the first time since they won automatic promotion in 2006/07, the year after the U’s had achieved the feat of League One runners-up, too.
