Colchester United have handed visiting Millwall an addditional ticket allocation for Easter Monday’s vital League One clash.
Following fears that large volumes of Lions’ travelling supporters would buy tickets for home areas – and some doing so – the U’s have acted quickly to prevent any unessacary trouble occuring. And with the away fans famous for football-related violence, the police, along with other authorities advised the U’s on the appropiatte action.
The away side had sold out their initiial 1,900 ticket allocation, in the North Stand, so a further 1,100 have been issued – this being in E1, E2 and E3.
A statement on the offical website, issued by chairman Robbie Cowling read:
‘Following strong advice relating to the game against Millwall, from both the police and the Football Licensing Authority, we have taken on board their recommendations and have made the seats in E1-E3 available to the away fans.
Millwall sold out the original 1,900 tickets that we allocated to them on Thursday last week.
And, although the club has been vigilant in its attempts to stop the Millwall fans buying seats in the home areas, we have subsequently been advised that a large contingent of Millwall fans will be travelling to the game without a ticket, if they are unable to purchase them in the next week.
Everyone is aware how strongly I feel personally about allocating any more tickets than I have to to the away supporters, but it would be irresponsible for me to ignore the safety advice that the club has been given on this occasion.
I am sure that our fans will continue to give Aidy and the players the best possible support on the day in what is a key game for both sides’ hopes of promotion.’
