Vital Colchester`s editors watched on as Aidy Boothroyd`s barmy army secured a battling point against Southampton, despite the odds, during his first game as manager this afternoon.
Colchester drew a gallant blank with the winless Saints on a day the club had saved all the pomp about ex-U’s skipper, Dean Hammond, for this particular match supplement. He appeared three times: once on the cover, once in a centre-fold and then again during a glossy-three page interview.
Coincidence?
On the pitch, there were mixed fortunes for the U`s; that their own efforts were rewarded was certainly no coincidence.
Fans were delighted to see the passionate Boothroyd and his chargers rewarded, having lost midfilder, Kem Izzet, to a red card and then skipper, Pat Baldwin, through what looked like a potentially very serious injury, before half-time. Baldwin was given a standing ovation from the travelling support when stretchered off, in recognition that he may have sustained serious hurt.
Meanwhile, Anthony Wordsworth and goalie, Ben Williams, both impressed most for United, while restored full-back, John White, again enjoyed milking applause for his welcome return to the right side of Essex. Medy Elito was back in contention and selected on the bench, too.
Defender Magnus Okuonghae also deserves an honourable mention for his fantastic goal-line clearance during the first period; a Matt Paterson shoot had seemed a dead-cert for goal.

How come we were in yellow when the new away kit is dark blue??!!?? Was Paul Clark on the bench or has he left the club now?
About the kit; Steve, you said the same thing and we have no clue! Regarding Clark – didn’t see him but I wasn’t really looking, I have to say!
Yep, I have the yellow one but not the new Blue one so was expecting that to be worn…. Than was shocked to see the Yellow one… Odd…
