Colchester’s Directors to Wise Up

Iwelumo scored 37 goals in two seasons at Layer Road, turned down various offers from Colchester to join Charlton and link up with former boss Phil Parkinson on a free transfer.

The influence of crest fallen ex Colchester boss Parkinson was sure to have had a major bearing on the big Scots decision.

Iwelumo believes the likes of top-scorer Jamie Cureton could follow suit if the club’s board do not show more ambition following the Us’ impressive 10th-placed finish under manager Geraint Williams last term.

‘Colchester United’s board of directors must start matching the players’ and coaching staff’s ambitions if they want to continue to move forward,’ Iwelumo told the Gazette.

‘The gaffer and the squad have great ambition. And after our achievements of the last two seasons the board should be doing a lot more to keep the squad together.

‘I was amazed they didn’t do more to keep me. Most clubs would die for a goalscoring duo like myself and Jamie Cureton. We were envied by a lot of clubs in the Championship and they would look to build around a partnership like that. I dread to think what will happen if another club comes in with a big-money bid for Cureton

I read that; it’s out of order. This time last year Iwelumo was saying that he’d never played this many games and now he says we have no ambition. Curo isn’t joined to Iwelumo’s hip either; he likes the club. Also, he wouldn’t have got to Charlton without Parky or Kinsella. It’s the second time i’ve heard him talk the club down; he did it on BBC Radio Essex a few weeks back.
