Chris Coyne`s new manager, David Mitchell, says ex-Colchester defender, Chris Coyne, did not join Perth Glory for the benefit of his bank account.

That`s contrary to what questions from the Australian media were anticipating at his signing days ago.

It made him another Oz-international singing for the Glory but, crucially on the weekly-pay issue, he not a marquee player.

Each A-League side is allowed to select a maximum of four players per squad as exempt from the divisional salary cap, but Mitchell confirmed Coyne isn`t currently one of them at Perth.

“It’s not all about money, money, money,” Mitchell said in a recent edition of the Brisbane Times. “Some of the guys have taken a drastic wage cut to come here,’ he said.

Mitchell added: “Chris has taken a big wage cut and that’s a credit to him. There were some big offers on the table for him.

“We told him where the club wanted to go and where we wanted to be … and he said he wanted to be a part of that.”

Coyne himself also refuted any idea that he had moved on for money only, this time in the West Australian.

Ahead of the season which finishes with a major tournament, he said: “It`s a big year for Aussies hoping to make it to the World Cup in 10 months.

“I wouldn`t be here otherwise. I`m not coming here to pick money up, I`m not coming here just to play games,” said Coyne, who had time remaining on his Colchester contract until the club agreed to terminate it last week.

Since the regular A-League season at Coyne’s new ends in February 2010, there remains a possibility he will return to Europe, and maybe England, to keep fit before the Australian national team travels to South Africa next summer.
