A disappointed Joe Dunne praised the mentality of his ‘outstanding` players after yesterday`s narrow loss to the MK Dons, despite Paul Ince`s side standing between them and a little piece of history.

Had Colchester`s current squad managed a fourth successive win this season, they would have set an all-time club record for the best start to the season in some seventy years.

Caretaker Dunne did not dwell on the defeat, saying of his players that they did their best. He told BBC Radio Essex: “We tried and tried and created chances, just it wasn`t to be. I thought we actually started the second half quite well; we all felt at one-nil we could certainly get back into it.

“We got into some good positions where we probably just lacked the killer cross or final ball but I think, if we play like that and with that kind of commitment and spirit, irrespective of who stands here, we`re going to win more games than lose
.”

So an overall optimistic response from Donne, whose charges have the chance to keep pace with an early runaway pack, including Charlton and Leeds United; the latter come to the Community Stadium next weekend.

Something had to give, we were going to lose at some stage in the season but the players have been outstanding this week – what better way than to look forward to the Leeds game in front of a packed house,” he added.
