Verdicts on the next Colchester United manager are still coming thick and fast, with views on possible appointments today from ex-U`s boss Steve Wignall and club Media Manager, Matt Hudson.

Wignall, speaking before his summariser slot on BBC Radio Essex at the weekend did say some potentially controversial things about the race to replace Paul Lambert, although his passion of the U`s to choose a younger candidate lead one site member to tout him as an overseeing Director of Football. He said: “Let`s be realistic – you win three games, you`re a genius, lose three games you`re a mug.

That`s football now, all over the world at all levels. Alex Ferguson looses the next three games and we`ve got doubts about him all-of-a-sudden – that`s how ridiculous it is!

He went onto to advance the cause of Joe Dunne, explaining: “I think Joe deserves at lease maybe 10 games, have a little look at him and they can still look at it from the outside as things are going on; if things go well and Joe takes to it, why not go with it? I can`t see a problem with it.

I`m not saying it`ll be cheaper – economically, it might be better all round.

Ok, the club`s not exactly strung for cash but everything helps. It will perhaps give the manager a bit more scope in signing players.”

While Wignall is an advocate of following the club`s fast-establishing tradition to give youth a chance, Matt Hudson, speaking to web-based station Radio MK said over the weekend that the club remain hopeful of attracting an all-together different style of leader.

He also commented on the press link between Colchester`s vacancy and Chelmsford`s Martin Allen.

Allen might have thrown his hat into the ring but as to whether he makes the interview stage has not been confirmed yet.

We`ve got a real club legend in Joe Dunne, who is caretaker at the moment and he is hugely popular with the fans.

Hudson added: “He`s played down his interest because he`s aware that there are some big names out there, so it will be interesting to see who does get it.

The likes of Aidy Boothroyd have been linked but it`s trying to find someone that fits what the club need at the moment.”

It will be interesting indeed to see if tomorrow’s media have any new names to add to the present list of 30 currently interested in the U’s post.
