Joe Dunne is installed as Colchester`s acting manager for tonight`s game against Gillingham. He promised “a response” following Paul Lambert’s enexpected departure to Norwich today.

The man who servered Colchester first as a player then coach also completed more than a ton of games for tonight`s league opponents but assured that the town`s siege mentality will help both players and fans when looking forward to life after Lambert.

Dunne told the gathered press this afternoon: “It is ironic that we will be playing Gillingham in my first game in charge. I suppose I will be clapped onto the pitch by both sets of fans, but booed off by one at the end – hopefully Gillingham’s!

Dunne distanced himself from the post full-time but pledged a performance of vim and vigour in spite of the recent off-the-field activities at the Community Staduim.

One thing you can guarantee from a Colchester team is that you’ll get a response.

This town is built on its fighting spirit and we will be working on that basis this evening when we take to the field.

He added:”This team of players are focussed and ready to go and we’ll give our best against Gillingham.”

Former defender Dunne is a popular figure at the Weston Homes Community Stadium having also filled-in as manager when Geraint Williams, now at Leyton Orient, was dismissed last autumn.
