Former Brentford manager and Colchester United central defender, Scott Fitzgerald, has remained cool over talk of him becoming the new assistant manager at Layer Road, insisting in tonight`s Evening Gazette he would talk to the club about the vacancy.

Fitzgerald, a fans` favourite in Colchester, has been linked with the post vacated by Mick Harford last week when he moved to the U`s Championship rivals QRP.

He has been mentioned for the job along with player-coach Aidan Davison, former U`s man and present Charlton coach Mark Kinsella and the club`s youth team boss, Joe Dunne.

“I won’t be throwing my hat into the ring for the job,” said Scott, who was recently sacked following the relegation of Colchester`s local rivals Brentford to League Two.

He added: “George (U’s manager Geraint Williams) will have his own people that he wants.

“But if he was to phone me I would talk to him.”
