Goalie Williams Talking U`s Terms

Surprise transfer target Ben Williams could be a Colchester player by next week as Carlisle today accepted an undisclosed bid for the goalkeeper.

Williams, 26, was only singed from Crew last summer but now could join Paul Lambert`s U`s in competition with current keepers, Dean Gerken and Mark Cousins.

All are young and fairly inexperienced, but if he signs, unless he is prepared to come as a possible reserve, Williams will probably displace Gerken at United.

Cousins, after all, has just signed a new contract, while Gerken spent much of last season on loan at Darlington.

Colchester`s interest was first reported yesterday as a bid was being prepared, as shown here on Vital U`s.

Greg Abbott, Carlisle manager, spoke about the bid on their official website: “There has been an offer for Ben and he is now talking to Colchester to see if it is a move that he wants to make,” he said.

He added that there could be a possible complication with the switch, which will be revealed in the coming days.

Williams is a former Manchester United youngster who spent four years with Crew before transfering a year ago.

So talks appear advanced. Where will Williams fit in?
