Paul Lambert has said he is not hiding behind the fact he “couldn`t turn down” the chance to manage Colchester’s rivals Norwich City.
The ex-U`s boss quit the current League One leaders last night, claiming he found it hard to leave the Essex side. Lambert lasted just nine months at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.
“I`ve worked with the people there and the lads that came in have been brilliant for me,” he told BBC Essex. “I`m not going to hide behind that and say anything else other than I just owe that to them because they are sat at the top of the league.
“The last two games, the lads have been brilliant for me. But when you get an opportunity like this, you can`t turn it down.”
The manger`s departure is reminiscent of George Burley`s move to Ipswich Town on Boxing Day 1994. The now Scotland boss eventually lead his new club to Premiership glory.

VITAL COLCHESTER; YOUR VOICE, YOUR CHOICE!
VITAL COLCHESTER IS 100% UNOFFICIAL – FOR THE FANS, BY THE FANS!
On the bright side, I cannot see us taking any of your players in this window, there isn’t any money.
Well, that and we probably all hope that you guys won’t be able to get your hands on them. Although you can have Phil Ifil!
We have already made 12 signings, he’ll have to go with what he has there. I’m sure Ifil is better than Otsemobor!
I’ll bet you a season-ticket he isn’t! But maybe he was just unlucky – he’ll get another looking at now Lambert has gone. I’ve got a feeling that Lambert will become another Sir Alex – if he’s ever loyal enough to stay for any peroid of time! He’ll want the Celtic job, so beware!
Ifil and Otsemobor are just as crap as each other! lol Dont care what he’s got to say! Have no respect for him!
