Colchester recovered from defeats to Crewe and Sheffield United by beating play-off chasing Oldham on Saturday as our league 1 survival bid was given a big boost.

Oldham would have been favourites to win at Boundary Park at the weekend but an early goal was enough to give us a one-nil win.

We couldn’t have got off to a better start when Fox’s corner wasn’t clear and Szmodics (2) fired home to give us a second minute lead as he turned home the loose ball – that was about the one and only first half chance, of note, for either side.

An equaliser came close shortly after the break with Oldham ‘keeper Kean preventing Massey and Briggs from adding another with us thankful to Walker, who denied Forte and Mellis.

Oldham did breakthrough in injury-time but Kelly’s effort was disallowed with an offside flag raised as we saw out a one-nil win.

Attention now moves away from this game and turns to our next one against MK Dons and we are looking for your view on what way this will go?
