Colchester United can improve upon last term’s fantastic tenth-place finish in the Championship according to former Charlton Athletic forward Kevin Lisbie.

The 28-year-old Jamaican international has gone on record as saying that the club he joined last month have the capacity to challenge anybody in the division, also already prising the effectiveness of his partnership with Clive Platt.

Although the duo have yet to link up competitively, because Platt is suspended and Lisbie injured, they looked strong during pre-season as both worked to gain fitness.

“It’s been great to play alongside Clive as I’ve not really played up front with a big man for a good few years now,” said Lisbie in Saturday’s matchday programme before the U’s took on Barnsley. “To be honest, I’m glad he’s up there with me, he’s a very good player.”

Having ended his 12-year stay with Charlton following their relegation from the Premiership, Lisbie could be forgiven for feeling a little homesick. But the Essex-based player is relishing a new challenge and thinks Colchester have good chance of doing well after last term’s record 10th-place finish.

“They only missed out on the play-offs by a couple of points in the last couple of games and everyone involved must be really pleased. I’ve now also seen the lads in training and there are some very talented players here.”
