On Saturday, winger Craig Watkins appeared briefly for the U`s on trial against Tiptree. Vital U`s brings you a quick lowdown on the possible signing…

Craig Watkins was top scorer at Conference South side, Havant & Waterlooville, last season, for whom he signed in October 2007. The 23-year-old scored 17 times, his record for last season is available here, and also featured in an F.A. Cup defeat to Brentford.

The player has had spells with Exeter and Sutton United.

In our latest poll Vital Colchester, we asked about the mystery man`s possible future with the U`s, which has yet to receive comment from manager Paul Lambert.

An optimistic thirteen percent said they would like to see him given a contract at the club instantly, while almost half that figure, six percent said singing him could turn out horribly.

By far the most popular option, with eighty-one percent of the vote, was that he get more minutes in a U`s shirt this season to prove his worth. It remains uncertain if the manager has told Watkins to return for more trials.

A full list of his appearances last season is also available here.
