U`s manager Paul Lambert showed a red card, yes, metaphorically speaking, to the referee following the weekend`s 2-1 win over Yeovil.

Lambert prioritised praising his potent team instead, although responded to BBC Radio Essex questioning by saying he didn`t have the abacus he needed in the dugout to count all the dubious calls made.

He might have been referring to the multitude of offsides – thirteen in all – at least half of which were directed at a frustrated but sharp Kevin Lisbie.

Presumably his gesticulations are what got him sent to the stands towards the end of the match.

It goaded the crowd almost as much as the decision to award Yeovil a free-kick, from which they eventually scored through Ryan Mayson, without an obvious recourse to the rules.

Since Lambert is not known for bemoaning the men in black, casual comparisons to his fellow countryman, Sir Alex Ferguson, who reacted badly after the recent Hilarity Shield match (forget about charity or community) against Chelsea, cannot be drawn.

Colchester’s Scott also said his side “were brilliant“, “looked a handful” and remained top of League Oneon merit“. But good news is no news, sometimes, folks. And besides, you’d already read all the performence paeans, right?

Roll on Monday. Not for the early morning call, more the headlines. It will be intriguing to see what the local media – and maybe even the Football Assotation – have made of these comments.
