Speculative Sky Article Raises Tierney Question

A Sky Sports article claiming erstwhile Shrewsbury Town defender Marc Tierney has rejected the offer of a new deal formally raises questions over his long-term Colchester future.

The hardworking and popular defender, 24, is reported to have turned down an extension to his current contract, understood by Sky to have more than 12 months remaining before expiry.

With no quotes from either Colchester United boss Aidy Boothroyd or Tierney himself, the somewhat neutral article can either be taken as plosive or negative news – that the U`s have begun negations early, or instead as a sign that Tierney intends to play handball regarding his next move.

Unconfirmed speculation surrounding Tierney earlier in the season linked him with possible moves to Southampton and Norwich City.

However, the recent Sky article confirms that the U`s intend to try tying Tierney down in the same fashion as their new captain this season, Magnus Okuonghae, who agreed to commit to the club until 2012 after a projected Premier League inquiry.

Tierney`s distinctly shaky performance in the side`s weekend loss to Hartlepool is unlikely to detract from an overall consistency this season that sees him a possible Player Of The Year candidate.

He has played 61 games for the U`s since arriving, initially on loan, in November 2008.

Top, top player! Most likely to come from his agent, trying to drum up some interest…! Very common, unfortunately in football nowadays.
