Rob Jones has fulfilled his long-standing ambition to return to England by sealing a transfer to newly-promoted Scunthorpe.

The defender, subject of interest from Colchester United and Nottingham Forest over the last six months, has joined the Championship side after new Hibs boss, John Hughes, failed to convince him to stay in Scotland.

He becomes Scunthorpe`s record transfer, moving for an undisclosed free, probably costing close to the £1 million quoted to United when they tried to sign him back in January.

Colchester were accused by Hibs of breaking a confidentiality agreement when news about several offers for Jones appeared on the official club website.

The Scottish side reported United to the Football Accusation over the matter, while Lambert remained wry on the issue, joking that Hibs wanted extortionate amounts for the giant central-back. .

Did the U’s stand a chance of getting Jones?

Well, shows he went for the level of football, as we’re probably a bit bigger club than Scunthorpe. Think the fee could be up to about 450-500k depending on performances.

Agreed; I think Hibs were annoyed with us at the time and knew Jones wouldn’t come to League One. Can’t help but feel we got taken for a bit of a ride over this one!
