The U’s dented play-off hopes received a major boost this afternoon with the news that Kevin Lisbie has successfuly appealed against the red card issued against Charlton Athletic.

Lisbie, on loan with Colchester United from rivals Ipswich Town, was dismissed with a straight red card during second-half stoppage time as the U’s lost 1-0. Referee Mike Jones gave the 32-year-old his marching orders for an apparent headbutt following an incident with Addicks man Nicky Bailey.

However, U’s boss Aidy Boothroyd was quick to confirm his eagerness to appeal within minutes of the game’s climax after failing to agree with Jone’s decision.

‘I think in situations like this, you put your faith in the system. The FA and referees get a lot of bad press but a lot of the time, it is totally unjustified and when you get a result like this, common sense prevails,’ Boothroyd told the club’s official website following the decision.

The result of the appeal will now mean Lisbie will be available for selection for Saturday’s trip to Hartlepool United, to boost the U’s front-line.

Good that it was overtuned; can;t really afford many more out at the moment! Also shows the system works, as Aidy says.
