Geraint Williams has admitted he fears a player exodus as the U’s Championship status looks set to end in relegation.

United are eleven points from safety, at the foot of the table, with just six games left to play.

‘I think that’s got to be a fear. Last summer has had a major impact on this year’s performances,’ Williams told BBC Essex, referring to the likes of Jamie Cureton, Chris Iwelumo, Richard Garcia and Wayne Brown all leaving last summer.

‘The main thing is that we look to keep the nucleus of the side together.

He added: ‘We have shown some good performances, especially box-to-box and going forward. What we haven’t been good enough is at the back.

‘So you want to keep your best players at the club and improve on the rest.’
