Colchester United beat Gillingham 1-0 to progress to the Third Round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

Mark Yeates got the decisive goal, his fourth of the season, at the Priestfield Stadium.

Gill’s winger Albert Jarrett was denied an opener, as U’s ‘keeper Mark Cousins tipped his free-kick around the post.

Twenty-five minutes in, Dean Hammond should have headed the U’s in front, but missed the target.

Early in the second-half, Johnnie Jackson and Steven Gillespie fire wide, as the U’s pressed.

On the hour mark the U’s made the break-through, Yeates curled home a trademark free-kick, from fully 30 yards, to give the U’s the lead.

The U’s controlled the final half-hour, with Yeates close to doubling his tally and the U’s lead.
