Average Fan Attends Just SIX Home Games…?

According to our business-savvy Chairman Robbie Cowling, U`s fans choose to attend just six home matches a season. A sad stat or just the money-saving truth?

Saturday`s Green`Un 24 Sport supplement in the EADT really caught the eye. Ex-U`s target, Norwich striker, Grant Holt said he didn`t want singling out as a star in City colours, Kevin Lisbie also expressed delight at being back with Colchester.

Hidden below that, in an article where Chairman Robbie Cowling reiterated some recent comments about how quite his manager had been off the transfer starting-blocks this summer, was a sharp statistic: “Many people prefer to go to about six games during the season.”

Now, Vital Colchester hasn`t seen the accounts. And Mr. Cowling didn`t show his working out, ala that old school Maths mantra. But an average of six seems a mite low. So what conclusions can be drawn from his words and that number?

Maybe he`s not speaking for a representative proportion of U`s fans, or perhaps the recent displays since relegation from the Championship in 2007 and last season`s steady process have caused a downturn?

Lest we forget, although wall-to-wall coverage ensures we can`t, that there is a worldwide recession right now.

Cue some good news from Cowling: “We have learned a lot from that first season [in League One]. Of course I`d always like to sell more season tickets – we have sold about the same as last year.”

That figure is a respectable 1,600 approx, apparently. But what of the niggling six-home games a season? Is it due to the success of the team, or the position of the new year-old Community Stadium…? Maybe something else?
