This just in – the best result of the past few days is that both the players and management at Colchester United have actually been listening to the fans.

By my count, that makes the score: Supporters: 1 Vs Everyone – or more aptly, everything – else: 0

Not to say the club isn`t usually receptive to what we want – credit due on the Weston Homes parking front this new season – but amid all the ego-centricity of Paul L******’s storm-in-a-tea cup exit, came the announcement that Colchester United finally unveiled a new kit that night.

Yes? Oh, I know the season`s already started… and no, the lads were not starkers during the only away game at Norwich, but in their home-strip. (Believe me, the amount of snaps shot at Carrow Road that day, if they had been, somebody was bound to notice…)

You didn`t buy the club`s latest away skin yet? Hey, I empathise; the skipper was left and did the manager on the day we got our kit on – exposed in a blink-and-you miss-it story, that stayed top of the reel on the official website for less than an hour.

And those of a nervous-wreck disposition wouldn`t have dreamed of buying it right then, anyway; partly because they were thinking, in darkest times, that there might not be a single soul left at the club come twilight over a very tough 24-hours. If that description made tumultuous Tuesday sound like an epoch then good, because it sure felt like one!

The wait for Colchester`s shirt was probably partly connected with their former sponsors falling into administration, but the dark colour is just what everyone asled for. (So watch where you put your mouse in future, because the rumours are actually true – those with power and influence do read message boards, after all…!)

A Southend fan, back in contact to gloat about Paul L*****t`s departure, had the temerity to tell me the new kit`s monochrome make-up was designed especially in mourning of our tragic-looking boss loss.

I prefer to read the shirt, which should get a first airing tomorrow against MK Dons, instead as a statement of intent.

Forget blue and white for now, folks – it is with top-of-the-league induced confidence that I cheer: ‘Here come the Men In Black’!
