Colchester United defender Chris Coyne made his international debut on Saturday, as Australia lost 1-0 to Iraq.

The U’s record-signing, 29, played 65 minutes before being substituted, in the World Cup Qualifier. Coyne will be hoping to get to feature once more, as the Socceroos take on Oman next Saturday.

Meanwhile, U’s boss Geraint Williams revealed he has mixed feelings about Coyne being on international duty.

He told The Colchester Gazette: ‘I’m delighted for Chris that he’s been picked in the Australia squad for their World Cup qualifying campaign.

‘I know how good it feels to link up with your country.

‘But we play a lot of games in this country and it would have been good for him – from our point of view – to have a couple of weeks’ break.

‘He had a few injury niggles towards the end of the season and we hope that he comes back fit and well.’
