Before last month`s Watford-Colchester tie at Vickerage Road, U`s midfielder Kevin Watson famously went on record as saying that the fans who were booing the side at that time would have done better to simply stay at home and watch Coronation Street.

Now, ahead of the return match just weeks later, Watford defender Jay DeMerit can identify with the abuse of coming from fans, even if Watford are at the opposite end of the league to Colchester, because the boot is very much on the other foot.

Watford, without a win in four, are still at the top of the Championship, but have been incurring the wrath of discontented Hornet fans, who have watched their lead slip away in recent weeks.

DeMerit said of the fan reaction: “It’s their right to be frustrated. That’s why they come and watch, but we all need to remember that we are top of the league.

We need to have a bit of confidence going into every game and know that if we do the right things we’ll win.

‘For most of the season, we’ve done that. Now, we’re not, but it’s very easy to get back to where we were.

‘We’re well in control of our own destiny. If we do the right things, we’ll be where we want to get to.’
