Dowie & Williams Want A Win

Both Ian Dowie and Geriant Williams have gone on record as saying they would love to take three points in tomorrow`s Championship clash between Colchester and Coventry City – but there can only be one winner.

Colchester are still smarting from what they see as an incomprehensible loss to rivals Ipswich, not least because it represents a complete conrast with the previous victory against West Brom.

Coventry, too, are struggling with inconsistency because the Sky Blues have failed to win, or score in, any of their last three matches.

On that slide in form, which cannot be left unchecked if Coventry are to realise their promotion ambitions, Dowie told the Coventry Telegraph today: “A win or two doesn’t take us a million miles away from the top six.

“I have had plenty of testing times as a manager and it is just a question of getting on with it,” said Dowie, whose name was in the frame for the Bolton job that this week went to Gary Megson.

He added: “The great thing about this game is that you get a chance to put it right and it is very important that we perform against Colchester tomorrow because when we do, we are a handful for any team.

“When confidence is down all you can do is get out there and do the horrible things as best you can and maybe you get a penalty decision that goes in your favour.”

Ironically, Dowie`s words will resonate with Colchester fans. They had a one goal lead in the recent 3-1 defeat to Ipswich, when a dubious penalty award, which was subsequently missed by Mark Yeates, acted in a negative way.

Ipswich were galvanised and went on to steal all three points.

“We have to put our defensive errors right,” explained U`s manager Geraint Williams this week, shortly after he had denied wanting to take over at the U’s rivals, Norwich City.
