U’s manager Joe Dunne has been pleased with the U’s pre-season campaign as it nears its conclusion with a fixture away to Maldon & Tiptree tomorrow afternoon, ahead of the new season beginning next weekend.

His side have played in a number of fixtures including three big games at the Weston Homes over the past week, with decent crowds in to watch the U’s against West Ham, Tottenham and Ipswich.

Over 20,000 people have been in across the three games, and Dunne told the official site that it is a taster of what could be if the team’s results can attract more support.

‘The last week has been wonderful and we’ve done exceptionally well,’ he stated. ‘The fans have backed us immensely which is a testament to the town, and we’ve all buzzed off of it – there’s a real buzz at the moment.

‘The three games gave everyone a chance to see opposition and we’re really pleased with the application – every game gave us something different and lots of positives.’

One of the overriding positives of pre-season has been the emergence of Tosin Olufemi who, due to an injury to Brian Wilson, has regularly filled in at right-back against the big-name opposition.

Having only recently turned nineteen, the youngster has been enjoying the plaudits for his performances and picked up the man of the match award in the 2-1 defeat to West Ham.

His performances haven’t escaped Dunne, who praised all the youngsters: ‘They’ve all blossomed and Tosin has been exceptional at right back. Alex [Gilbey] had a taste at Newport, played at Wembley and has matured over the summer.

‘Drey [Wright] is stronger after a season of games so they’re all benefitting and, next year, they’ll be better for it as well when we take in a new group.’
