Club captain, Dean Hammond, has helped supporters concerned about the year-old Community Stadium`s atmosphere by encouraging investment in some musical instruments.

Hammond, who joined Colchester in the final months of the side`s spell at Layer Road in 2008, must be hoping this will allow the U`s to recapture the title they held in 2006 as the club with officially the loudest fans in the Football League.

Squad players, the CUCSA supporters` Assassination and a local business clubbed together for funds to buy a drum and trumpet. It comes after the new relocation of many season-ticket holders to the South Stand area, which should generate more noise behind one of the WHCS goals.

Previously, some fans had been campaigning for the renaming of the West Stand in honour of ex-U`s boss Dick Graham, as another way to make the new ground feel like home.

“When we heard about the move to the South Stand we thought it would be a good idea to have a collection to help purchase a drum and a trumpet to help them generate some extra atmosphere,” he explained speaking on behalf of the whole team in a recent edition of the club`s matchday programme, U`s Review.

“The players are proud to belong to this club and we hope that the drum will be one way the players and fans can get together behind a real push for the Championship this season,” said the former Brighton midfielder.
