Colchester United kept up their 100% pre-season record with a narrow 1-0 victory over Chelmsford City.
A moment of magic from record signing Steven Gillespie was enough to give the U’s the win.
The ex-Bristol City front-man skilfully controlled John Whites’ long pass and cleverly lifted the ball over onrushing Clarets goalkeeper Danny Gay.
New signing Akanni-Sunday Wasiu rattled the cross-bar, as the U’s looked for a second, but Gillespie’s goal proved enough.

i was there , griffiths was impressive , looks a good talent
Gillespie and Perkins both looked good. Quintyn didn’t look anything much and Mitchell Nelson was very poor. Also found it very strange when Wasiu went off and Hammond was pushed up front with Vernon!!
Cool, Gillespie is proving himself to be a very good signing.
