Watson, now 34-years-old, will have a scan to reveal whether or not his season is over, and possibly his U`s career too.

If the scan reveals a tear, Watson`s season will be over and with his contract up in the summer he is not expecting a new one.

Speaking to the EADT, Watson admitted: ‘If it was up to me, and I was the manager or in charge at the top, then I have to be honest and say that I wouldn’t offer myself another contract’

‘I haven’t played enough games and I’m now 34. Of course I don’t want to leave the club. I’ve been at Colchester for longer than any other club in my career, and I’ve really enjoyed it, but I have to be realistic.’

After being plagued by injuries for most of the campaign Watson described it as ‘horrible’, he added: ‘I’m really frustrated. I’ve struggled for fitness all season. It was the first time I had missed a pre-season, in my 17 or 18 years as a professional, after which I’ve been playing catch-up. It’s been horrible.’

The man signed by ex-boss Phil Parkinson went on: ‘I haven’t done myself justice this season. I don’t want the game against Wolves (on March 1) to be my last, but I never felt myself in that game.’

‘I was so far from where I wanted to be. And when I felt the calf pop on Tuesday morning, I just sat down on the floor and thought about the implications.’

‘The pain was immediate, like I had been shot in the leg. I’m dreading the scan because I fear a tear. That would keep me out for the season’ He explained.
