Two Wins Will Erase Cup Hurt – Hammond

DEAN HAMMOND is certainly singing from the same song sheet as fans when he says a target of two home wins in a week will compensate for Tuesday`s Cup loss to Leyton Orient.

Colchester face first Yeovil this afternoon and then newly-promoted Gillingham on Tuesday evening knowing that a good start is vital to avoid the same negativity as surrounded last season`s home form at the now year-old Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Speaking to Dream 100 FM this week, Hammond said: “I think this season the league is most important. That`s what we`ve worked in pre-season for. We want to win every game but if we win Saturday and win Tuesday then that game can be forgotten.”

The skipper also said they were looking to replicate last season`s consistent away stint Рtwelve wins on the road Рin Essex this time around, even if accepting that needing to win those home games is a clich̩.

If you`re going to be successful in any competition and in any league, home form need to be good. We disappointed last year – we had a very good away record – but we really want to chance that this year and Saturday starts afresh.

The home form is very important to us because we want to entertain our own supporters. We`ll work on it and have talked about it a lot. It`s our home stadium, no matter what size pitch you play on. It`s down to us to go out and win games.”

It will be interesting to see if a bumper crowd at this afternoon’s game makes any difference to how the U’s perform.
