Colchester United`s all-heart skipper, Pat Baldwin, has stressed the club`s need to appoint their next manager as soon as possible amid claims an announcement is due this Tuesday.

Speaking the day before rumours that former Watford boss, Aidy Boothroyd, has sealed a golden handshake deal to replace Paul Lambert, Baldwin explained the importance of getting much-needed guidance.

We need a manager put in place so we know exactly how he wants us to play and go from there; with this squad, we`ve really still got a great chance [of achieving promotion this season],” Baldwin told Dream 100 FM on Thursday evening. Winning results against Norwich, Gillingham and Yeovil appear testimony enough to those words.

Baldwin also talked about the privilege of leading the club out against the Gills, but maintained a realistic stance on maintaining long-term his new role as stand-in captain.

“It doesn`t change me; I like to think of myself as a bit of a talker on the pitch anyway, and as captain one of your jobs is to keep the team going. Being skipper at any football club is a proud moment and I`m very proud as I have been here so long.

But it`s down to the new manger, depending perhaps if he brings his own player in, or sees a better candidate for the captaincy. “

Fellow defender, Alan Maybury, later confirmed that the squad, although receiving tip-offs from within the game, have no idea who their boss could be and Baldwin would not be draw on confirming which football figure he wishes to work with next.

The long-serving Baldwin did however again impress the need for a swift decision: “We`ve got a very good team-spirit in our changing room; everyone`s really close. It is unsettling when you haven`t got a manager in place – Joe and his number two are doing a fantastic job but we need the manager in as soon as we can, really.”

The club appears to have heeded his call as caretaker Dunne suggested recently that this weekend`s game against Leeds was his last in charge.
