Colchester United are set to propel a surprise transfer bid for goalkeeper Ben Williams.

The Carlisle United stopper is a target for U’s boss Paul Lambert, according to the News & Star Sport. Williams, 26, is seen as a key part of The Cumbrians’ side and the U’s look set to make a bid wthin then next few days.

Carlisle are currently enduring a number of finicial difficulties, so Lambert is hopeful the U’s offer will be to good to turn down. And with the recent deaprture of Mark Yeates, for a fee believed to be up to £750,000, the U’s are well equiped with transfer fund to boost their squad.

After signing from Crewe Alexandra last summer, on a free transfer, Williams struggled for form in the first half of the season. However, perfromances improved greatly after the New Year with his form helping The Cumbrians steer clear of relegation.

Lambert looks keen to add to his goalkeeping roaster, despite having Dean Gerken and Mark Cousins already available. Rumours linking Gerken with a move away from the Weston Homes Community Stadium are sure to surface once again if Williams joins.

If a deal is agreed Williams will be the second Carlisle player to make the move from North to South inside six-months following Simon Hackney’s January move.

So would Williams make a good purchase?

Unless he’s amazing, this could be a very bad idea. Although he’s till young and of course Lambert must have watched him. Why sign up Cousins if you want a newbie?
