Watson: I`m ready to rescue U`s

Colchester United midfielder Kevin Watson has said he is all but ready to join the U`s relegation fight, after missing most of the campaign through injury.

Geraint Williams` men, who are being kept off the foot of the table only by goal difference, are looking to re-start an unbeaten run, which took a big blow with Saturday`s defeat to Brsitol City.

Could veteran midfield lynchpin Watson be the man to do it?

At 34 Watson has a wealth of experience, which could prove vital as the U’s look to make it three successive seasons in the second tier of English football.

Watson told My Football Writer: ‘It was an Achilles problem initially at the start of the year, I came back and literally was back a handful of games and my calf went so it’s been a nightmare season.’

‘I think I’ve only been fit for about five weeks the whole season so there’s a bit of fitness to catch up on.’

‘I’ve had several reserve games and I’m beginning to feel somewhere back to where I want to be.’ He explained.

‘It’s been very frustrating but I’m not very far off at all and I keep saying it, but hopefully once this problem is behind me I’ll be 100% sooner rather than later.’

‘It’s not been the best season to watch, fortunately for us we’ve shown signs of coming good, the last four or five games before the weekend the boys were very good.’ He added.

Now the former Reading man is hoping to be handed a starting role: ‘I’ve been sub for a few games and I still feel I’m lacking that bit of sharpness that I know myself that I’ll need to have to start a first team game.’

‘The manager obviously knows that I can bring that experience but obviously I’m 34 now and while I’m not coming to the end just yet, I’m heading towards the end of my playing days.’ Watson admitted.

But at 34, he still feels he has something to offer: ‘I want to play as long as I can and I still feel I have something to offer. If I didn’t I would pack up, but I still feel I have two or three years left at whatever level.’

‘But the manager has included me, he’s made me a substitute the last five games so I’m obviously still in his thoughts.’
