A LATE goal from Clive Platt took his tally to eight for the season, and all three points to North Essex on Tuesday against Millwall.
Colchester bounded back from last weekend`s disappointing defeat to Scunthorpe by saving their best play of a poor second half to win the game.
Platt`s goal came thanks to a combination of Mark Tierney and Mark Yeates` good work.
Yeates held the ball up after receiving it from Tierney`s throw, talking it under control with a great first touch. Having won a corner, and evading an on-coming challenge from James Henry, Yeates delivered a cross which founds Clive Platt. The precision of the cross, and sheer strength, beat the outstretched David Forde right in the middle of the goal.
Colchester beat a side that had taken 17 points from a possible 21 and were hoping to win to improve their odds of an automatic League One promotion spot.
What was surprising is that Colchester`s beaten XI from the weekend all remained in this line-up and managed to redeem themselves by stealing a tough victory. Manager Paul Lambert said at full-time that his team “deserved” win.
Millwall appeared to have the better of the game, though, especially though the lively striker Gary Alexander, who fashioned a great chance before exiting play prematurely with injury, after fifteen minutes. David Martin also had a free header which some speeded defending by Tierney saw cleared off the line and over the bar.
Alexander got a later chance on 20 and the home side could easily have been aggrieved at the half-time score still goaless, He also put the on-loan Jason Price through on goal before leaving the field.
Colchester didn`t threaten in the first half, and equally managed to get all four of their defenders booked by full time. They didn`t create a single first-half chance.
It was a scrappy game in trough, even in the second half little improved. Colchester managed to nick a win and now must prepare for tomorrow`s game against Leeds.
U`s: Cousins, Maybury, Trotman, Baldwin, Tierney, Perkins, Hammond, Izzet, Yeates (White), Platt, Hawley (Wasiu).
